Corn Rootworm Resistance to BT-Corn Reported
نویسنده
چکیده
Cornell University by seed industry legal restrictions placed on public scientists, limiting both laboratory and field research from the mid-1990s until 2010. Widespread and organized objections by corn entomologists from major agricultural universities in 2010, convinced the seed companies to loosen the legal restrictions limiting research by public scientists involving GMO crops. As a result, the 2009 observation of trait failure in southern Minnesota became public in 2010 and corn rootworm resistance to the BT trait was verified in the laboratory at Iowa State during 2010 and 2011.

Evidence of Resistance to Cry34/35Ab1 Corn by Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae): Root Injury in the Field and Larval Survival in Plant-Based Bioassays.
Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is a serious pest of corn in the United States, and recent management of western corn rootworm has included planting of Bt corn. Beginning in 2009, western corn rootworm populations with resistance to Cry3Bb1 corn and mCry3A corn were found in Iowa and elsewhere. To date, western corn rootworm populations...
متن کاملGreenhouse-Selected Resistance to Cry3Bb1-Producing Corn in Three Western Corn Rootworm Populations
Transgenic corn producing the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin Cry3Bb1 has been useful for controlling western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, one of the most economically important crop pests in the United States. However, rapid evolution of resistance by this beetle to Bt corn producing Cry3Bb1 has been reported previously from the laboratory, greenhouse, and field. He...
متن کاملInheritance and fitness costs Of field-derived resistance To Cry3Bb1 corn by western corn rootworm
The western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte) is an economically important pest of corn. One strategy used to manage western corn rootworm is the planting of transgenic corn that produces one or more Cry toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). Refuges of non-Bt corn function to delay the development of resistance and the greatest delay in resistance is expected whe...
متن کاملField-Evolved Resistance to Bt Maize by Western Corn Rootworm
BACKGROUND Crops engineered to produce insecticidal toxins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) are planted on millions of hectares annually, reducing the use of conventional insecticides and suppressing pests. However, the evolution of resistance could cut short these benefits. A primary pest targeted by Bt maize in the United States is the western corn rootworm Diabrotica vi...
متن کاملField-evolved resistance by western corn rootworm to multiple Bacillus thuringiensis toxins in transgenic maize.
The widespread planting of crops genetically engineered to produce insecticidal toxins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) places intense selective pressure on pest populations to evolve resistance. Western corn rootworm is a key pest of maize, and in continuous maize fields it is often managed through planting of Bt maize. During 2009 and 2010, fields were identified in Iowa...
متن کاملBt Corn Rootworm Protected Corn: Performance and Resistance Management
Although field corn pest management has remained largely dependent on restricted-use, broad-spectrum insecticides (organophosphates, carbamates and pyrethroids) for corn rootworm control, this situation is changing rapidly with the 2003–2004 market entry of highly selective tactics, including genetically modified Bt rootworm corn hybrids and nicotinoid insecticidal seed treatments labeled for c...
